This rare and beautifully understated small jar by Grace Chapella was created when she was 99 years old, a remarkable testament to her lifelong dedication to pottery. Featuring her distinguished butterfly (or moth) design, the remaining motifs that flank the two butterflies are derived from the ancient Sikyatki ruins, reflecting the deep historical and cultural influences in her work.
What makes this jar particularly special is the tender, expressive quality of the painted decoration. While the dark brown and sienna pigments, stippling techniques, cross-like markings, and dots remain consistent with her earlier work, the brushwork here carries a more fluid and less steady hand, adding a unique charm and character. The painted elements, though familiar, take on a more personal, intimate feel, capturing the essence of a potter who had spent nearly a century perfecting her craft.
Grace Chapella, known as White Squash Blossom, was a pivotal figure in Hopi-Tewa pottery. A neighbor and student of Nampeyo of Hano, she carried forward the traditions of First Mesa pottery while witnessing vast changes in the art form over her 107-year lifetime. Her butterfly (or moth) design remains a signature motif, passed down through generations of her family, including her daughter Alma Tahbo, granddaughter Deanna Tahbo, and great-grandson Mark Tahbo.
Signed on the bottom with 99 years old, this piece is a rare and deeply personal creation, embodying both the mastery and enduring spirit of one of the most influential Hopi-Tewa potters.
