This historic Pomo Indian coiled basket bowl dates to circa 1900-1910. The Pomo are a tribe residing in the Napa Valley area of Northwestern California. They are noted for having made some of the finest baskets of all Native American tribes.
Some of the most recognizable types of Pomo baskets are the gift baskets, often adorned with feathers and beads, that were given as gifts during special ceremonies within the tribe. Pomo also wove utility baskets for storage, cooking and winnowing purposes, which in addition to being used, were also cherished as works of art.
This gift basket is a fantastic example of the superior level of technical weaving ability and artistry found in coiled Pomo basketry. The weave is exceptionally fine and the design is extremely well proportioned to the shape of the basket.
Condition: The basket is in mint condition.
