This small polychrome Acoma seed jar by Dorothy Torivio is a captivating example of her precision painting. The design expands outward from the spout, creating an optical masterpiece with meticulous detail. Painted in black with three red dots in the "seed" portion of the design, this jar exemplifies Dorothy's signature style, influenced by the Op-Art movement of the 1970s.
Dorothy Torivio transformed Acoma Pueblo pottery, earning numerous awards for her intricate, eye-dazzling patterns. This seed jar showcases her dedication to craftsmanship, from its carefully shaped form to its precise decoration.
The black paint, made from boiled Rocky Mountain bee plant leaves, was applied using a fine yucca-fiber brush, demonstrating the traditional techniques she mastered. The design begins as a minuscule pattern at the spout, expanding to its largest scale at the shoulder before diminishing again toward the base, creating a dynamic and balanced composition. This miniature visual masterpiece is signed Dorothy Torivio, Acoma, N.M. on the bottom.
