Artist signature of Gerald Nailor (1917-1952) Toh Yah - Diné of the Navajo Nation PainterThis original pastoral painting by Gerald Nailor beautifully captures three antelope in an elegant and harmonious composition. Painted on a warm tan background, the scene is a masterful study of movement and form. Two of the antelope overlap, facing opposite directions, creating an optical illusion of a singular, fluid mass, while the third antelope stands apart, confronting the viewer and drawing them into the tranquil setting.

In the upper left corner, a delicate rainbow and rain motif — hallmarks of the Navajo painting tradition — adds a spiritual and cultural dimension to the piece. Nailor's technique is extraordinary, defined by confident, fluid outlines that highlight the grace and vitality of his subjects. True to the Santa Fe Indian School's "studio style," his focus remains on the animals themselves rather than an elaborate background, allowing their presence to take center stage.

As one of the rarest artists among Dorothy Dunn's students due to his early passing, Nailor's works are highly sought after. Dunn herself described his paintings as "sophisticated," praising his ability to render every detail with precision and refinement. Signed and dated in the lower right corner Gerald Nailor ‘37  — this painting is a rare and exceptional example of Nailor's artistic legacy.
