San Juan Pueblo artist signature of Tommy Edward Montoya (1942-2009) Than Ts'áy TasThis large, elegant painting by Tommy Edward Montoya with dimensions of 40" by 52" depicts a procession of four Corn Manas, or Corn Maidens, central figures in Pueblo culture. Corn Manas symbolize abundance, growth, and the sacred connection between the people and the life-giving forces of the natural world. Revered as bearers of sustenance and blessings, they represent the spirit of corn, an essential crop and a cornerstone of Pueblo life.

In this painting, Montoya employs an elegant dry brush technique, a meticulous process in which layers of paint are lightly applied with a wide bristle brush. This method allows the white background to shine through, forming the delicate shapes of the Corn Mana figures. The technique is additive, with each stroke enhancing the composition, leaving no room for error as paint is applied without removal.

As described in Southwest Profile (Jan/Feb 1986): "The work of Tommy Montoya is a blending of old and new. It is both traditional and abstract. The subject matter is centuries old, but the techniques and materials used are contemporary."

Signed in the lower right as Ts'ay Ta, this painting, created in 2005, exemplifies Montoya's masterful ability to merge Pueblo cultural traditions with modern artistic techniques. A testament to his skill and vision, this piece captures the timeless essence of the Corn Manas while showcasing a contemporary artistic sensibility.
