Once Known Native American Carver

There are going to be some comments regarding the identification of this Hopi Pueblo katsina doll as a Cocklebur katsina because it has appearances of a Velvet Shirt katsina, however, our consultant identified this based on the facial features of the mask.  This katsina has been labeled Nuvak’china and Pachok’china, but Barton Wright states that either name is correct and means Cocklebur katsina.  We were informed that this is a rare carving as this katsina is not often represented.

This carving appears to be a little later than most in this collection, perhaps from the 1960s.  The doll is mounted on an unpainted pedestal but not of the type associated with other Fred Harvey mounts.  It is possible that the Company ceased using the square black pedestals by this time.  There are no identifying markings to indicate a Fred Harvey provenance, however the doll is part of the collection with that provenance.
