Abel Sanchez (1899-1971) Oqwa Pi - Kachina Stick was known as Oqwa Pi in the Tewa language. He was the grandfather of San Ildefonso potter Russell Sanchez. Except for what little instruction he received at the Santa Fe Indian School, he had no formal training. He was accepted as an exceptional artist and was able to raise and support a large family with his art alone.
This painting of a buffalo or American bison is presented in traditional pueblo style—featuring the main subject with no distracting background, ground plane or sky. His use of strong color was a factor that made his paintings popular. Amazingly, the colors have stayed strong and vivid.
Condition: very good condition
Provenance: from the collection of a gentleman from Texas
