By the late 1960s Maria was a nationally-known potter. During her life, she collaborated with different painters, first her husband, Julian, then her son. Popovi Da, and later her daughter-in-law, Santana.
This is a photo of Maria and her son Popovi. It was taken in the late 1960s by photographer Maurice Eby, who was a professional photographer from Las Vegas, New Mexico. He was hired to take photos of Maria and Popovi to promote their studio at San Ildefonso Pueblo. Eby is also known for his postcards of Maria and Popovi. Eby’s wife Ida May is featured in an article in the Summer Issue 2014 of El Palacio, the official publication of the Museum of New Mexico. Her jewelry collection is part of an upcoming exhibit called Turquoise, Water, Sky: The Stone and Its Meaning.
This is an original photograph, signed by Eby. The paper folder in which the photograph is mounted has a pencil notation: “To Frederick with our warmest regards. Popovi/Maria Poveka.”
A color post card of this image was released by Petley Studios of Phoenix, Arizona. The image was reversed on the post card.
