“The Mystery Storm” could be interpreted as a storm that was unexpected or unexplained or, perhaps, out of season. What Beatien Yazz had in mind remains unknown. The painting is powerful in presentation—the dark sky with the white lightning setting the stage for the excellent presentation of the three horses and their riders. The horses are startled and the Indians appear to be frightened.
The brown palette of the sky and the grasses in the foreground serve as a perfect stage for the colorful garments being worn by the Indians and the colors the artist chose for the three horses. The painting is dated 1982 and is an excellent example of how accomplished he was later in his career. Yazz painted many small paintings of animals and children but his major paintings like this one illustrate how talented he really was.
