In checking our historic records of paintings by Beatien Yazz, we found that we have not had a Buffalo hunter painting by him before. Apparently he did not paint many such images or, if he had, I think we would have seen one before, and we have not.
In this image, the Navajo hunter is being thrown from his horse at the time when the buffalo or bison head butts the horse. The Navajo, dressed only in a loin cloth, concha belt and moccasins appears to be in midair as he forces his spear into the bison. There is very little ground plane and no background imagery. His traditional placing of clouds and birds is the only imagery other than the horse, rider and bison.
The Native American painting is signed in lower right with the artist’s name but without a date. It is framed without use of mats, allowing the entire painting to be viewed.
Condition: very good condition. The paint colors are strong and vivid. There are two areas, at the bottom left and center, where some of the brown body paint on the rider apparently dripped from the painter’s brush.
