Artist signature of Julius Charles Berninghaus (1905 – 1988) Southwest Painter"Summer Garden" by Charles Berninghaus is a vibrant impressionist painting that captures the essence of a sunlit garden. The charm of this piece lies in the thick, expressive daubs of color applied directly onto the board, immersing the viewer in the artist's creative process. Known for his dedication to painting daily, Berninghaus masterfully translates the fleeting effects of light and color in the natural world.

The composition centers around a lush hedge row, possibly containing roses, as suggested by the intense crimson strokes nestled within the emerald and earthy greens. These foreground forms contrast against the warm, distinguishable silhouette of an adobe dwelling in the background, reinforcing the harmony between nature and traditional Southwestern architecture.

The rapid, energetic brushwork exemplifies Berninghaus' impressionist approach. Through dynamic color application and an intuitive sense of composition, "Summer Garden" stands as a testament to Berninghaus' lifelong devotion to capturing the beauty of Northern New Mexico. This painting is framed in a wood frame and signed in the lower right corner.

Julius Charles Berninghaus (1905-1988) was a distinguished impressionist landscape painter whose artistic journey was deeply influenced by his father, Oscar E. Berninghaus, a founding member of the renowned Taos Society of Artists. Growing up immersed in the art world, Charles naturally gravitated toward painting. He received his formal education in St. Louis, graduating high school in 1924 before studying at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Art Students League in New York.

After a period in New York, Berninghaus ultimately settled in New Mexico, where he dedicated his career to capturing the region's landscapes in his signature impressionist style. His work reflects a deep connection to the light, color, and atmosphere of the Southwest, a passion that defined his lifelong artistic practice.
