The Diné enjoy get-togethers probably because they are so isolated on the reservation. Individual family hogans could be as much as 60 miles apart. Ceremonial Sings, Yeibichai Dances, and Squaw Dances are good reasons for the clans to gather in large numbers.
This painting illustrates the gathering period as the Diné start arriving. It is possible that the female at the lead of the group of important looking men could be the honoree of the Squaw Dance that is planned. I have been told that the banner she carries is a wedding banner, so perhaps she is being betrothed in the upcoming dance.
The painting is signed in lower right but not dated. Since it is from the Balcomb family, we know it pre-dates the 1970s.
Condition: It appears to be in original excellent condition, but has not been examined out of the frame
Provenance: From the collection of the family of the former Balcomb's Gallery.
