A pair of Rams appearing to attack each other is probably not intended to portray such an action. Most likely, the San Ildefonso Pueblo artist’s intent was more pictorial and graphic than representational.
José Disiderio (J.D.) Roybal [1922-1978] Oquwa - Rain God was very precise in line drawing as is quite evident in each element of the painting. It appears that he very carefully drew the lines with ink and then filled in the spaces with watercolor. Each line is perfect in execution as if done by a trained draftsman. This certainly is not a painting that was rushed to completion so it could be sold. This Original Painting of Two Rams under Protective Rainbow was very carefully laid out and executed with patience and skill. It is an exceptional work.
