Robert Montoya (Soe Khuwa Pin or “Fog Mountain”) was born in 1947, and is the son of Ohkay Owingeh painter and former Santa Fe Indian School art department head, Gerónima Cruz Montoya. Mrs. Montoya began her teaching career as assistant to Dorothy Dunn. Robert Montoya has multiple degrees in architecture and also has experience as an architect. He resides at Sandia Pueblo.
We have not had many paintings by Montoya but of the ones we have had, none were of the style of this one. This is certainly more architectural in line execution. The lines and circles could have been executed with architectural drawing instruments. This painting is signed Soe Khuwa Pin and dated 8-91 in lower center. It was executed in multiple colors with figures overlapping and presented with the night sky. It is a complicated design and is most impressive. The mixture of colors and shapes is strong and masterful. It is an excellent painting.
