Eagles generally build their nest in a living tree but since they use the same nest year after year, it is conceivable that they would continue to use it after the tree dies and there is nothing but bare branches remaining, as in this painting. Eagles add sticks to the nest year after year until the nest is exceptionally large, the largest of any bird's nest. They sometimes start adding onto a nest in late winter or early spring because it could take several months to complete.
It is quite likely that Beatien Yazz saw such a nest in a snag tree during his youth. It would be quite typical for there to be dead trees on the Navajo Reservation where heat is abundant and water is scarce. Yazz spent most of his career painting scenes with which he was familiar.
This painting is signed B. Yazz in lower right and dated 78. It is double matted and framed in a silver tone metal frame.
Condition: The painting appears to be in original condition although it has not been examined out of the frame.
Provenance: From an Albuquerque resident.
