Julián Martinez, San Ildefonso Pueblo Painter

Julian Martinez has portrayed the fleeing antelope in a realistic pose, yet emblazoned its body with a jagged arrow, perhaps signifying its life force. One can almost hear the crack of thunder as heavy black rain clouds flash out their lightning. The startled antelope, with tail held up high in alert, leaps over a plant in its path as it dashes away from the storm.

Julian’s use of just three elements (clouds, deer and plant) sharply defines the visual space of the painting. The repeating rounded black rain clouds with their striped band, as well as the arrow- like design on the animal’s torso, suggests a 1920s decorative style.

Signature of Julián Martinez (1885-1943) Pocano - Coming of the Spirits

The colors of this Native American painting remain strong and vivid even after three quarters of a century. The painting is signed Julian Martinez, in the lower right.  It has recently been framed by floating the painting without an outer mat and with a black frame with a gold-toned fillet.  All acid-free materials were used.  It is ready to hang and enjoy.
