Rance Hood (b.1941 - ) Au Tup Ta Yellow Hair has illustrated the hardship of his Comanche forbears in this painting. The Comanche Scout, wrapped in a blanket, still shows the effect of the cold in his facial expression. The horse, mired in snow, shows his displeasure as well. Yet, the scout is performing his responsibilities. The painting was executed in muted natural tones of browns and yellows. There are no other landscape or structures to detract from the importance of the main feature of man and horse. The hair of the man, mane and tail of the horse and the fringe on the moccasin all reveal that the wind is blowing from their backs. They have taken a position of protection.
Rance Hood has had a varied job career—mill worker, oil field worker, designer, sculptor and painter. He received a commission from Turbo West Aircraft Company for an exterior design for the Cheyenne III jet aircraft. He also received a commission from the Comanche Nation to design a commemorative emblem and medallion, and a commission from Comanche County, Oklahoma, for a directory cover. These commissions serve as proof of his recognized talent as an artist. Publications in which he has been featured and exhibits of his art are much too numerous to list here. It suffices to say that he is a talented Oklahoma artist and has received such recognition.
