Summer storms over the Taos Mountains and Santa Fe's Sangre de Cristo Mountains are among nature's most spectacular moments, akin to storms over the Grand Canyon. Moments like these are irresistible to artists of the Southwest.
John Marin, Victor Higgins, Raymond Jonson, James Morris and others have painted storms over the Taos Mountains. Now, Navajo artist Tony Abeyta has done so and in a most spectacular manner. The rolling hills are awash in color—reds, yellows, tans, greens and blues—and are being nurtured with strong waves of rain. There is almost a cubist or modernist approach to the painting. As usual, Abeyta has produced a powerful image of nature at work.
Abeyta is a very versatile artist. He is unquestionably one of the most talented and celebrated young artists of today. He has continued to expand his area of interest in painting and constantly has enlarged his field of expertise. He is one of today's most collectible young Native artists.
The painting is framed in a handmade wood frame with gold wash. The artist's signature appears in lower right.
