The story of this painting is the story of the art of Roseta Santiago. A chance encounter with an unknown man sparked an interest in Roseta to record his handsome face. She was enthralled with his strong features and asked if she could paint him. It was then she learned that he was a native of San Felipe Pueblo. To focus on the face, she shrouded him in a white blanket to conceal all but his face. Roseta Santiago approaches all her art in this manner. She searches for items of interest to her—people, collectibles, or objects of everyday use.
It was a wonderful day when I met Roseta and purchased my first painting from her. I was enthralled with the painting and more enthralled with the artist. She is beautiful and charming and as full of energy as anyone I have ever met. She is a mover and shaker. Her first trip to my house was an experience as she walked around looking at pottery and paintings. She took out her cell phone, called the editor of a magazine and told him to get over here and look at this house because he should publish it—which all happened, because Roseta said it should be done. That is the kind of person she is. She is dynamic and talented and not restrained in any way. That is all in addition to her being a great artist.
