Helen Hardin (1943-1984) Tsa-Sah-Wee-Eh - Little Standing Spruce was from Santa Clara Pueblo. She was very adept at painting a lot of energy is a small space. This abstract-style figure of a man is powerful in its own right, but the detailed background of geometric shapes and parallel lines add spark to the figure. It appears that the man is being affected by the energy of his surroundings.
It may be difficult to see in the imagery of these images on-line, but the cocoon surrounding man is filled with thin parallel lines completely enclosing him. The remainder of the painting is filled with detailed mazes from border to border.
The patience of Hardin when working on paintings has been often spoken of but this is an absolute demonstration of her immense determination to put her all into her work. This is one of the finest of her small paintings.
The painting is signed in lower right Tsa-Sah-Wee-Eh and with the small spruce tree and dated 1976.
