Artist Hallmark Signature of Norbert Peshlakai, Diné Silversmith.Seven horses graze peacefully across the face of this wide cuff created by award winning Diné artist Norbert Peshlakai. The bracelet consists of four bands of varying width.  Known for his ability to render unique textures on silver and the application of whimsical stamps, Peshlakai created a tableau on which the seven horses rest. The bottom layer is a band of small, etched vertical lines.  Above that is a narrow band of smooth silver. Forming the ground under which the horses stand is a band of small, stamped triangles. The seven horses are stamped on a matte finished band.  Each horse has three small circles on its midsection. A circle with a middle dot over an X is part of Peshlakai’s hallmark. His distinctive hallmark rests on the surface of the bracelet rather than on the inside.

Norbert Peshlakai was born on the Navajo Reservation in 1953. He is a fourth-generation silversmith, the name Peshlakai means “silversmith” in the Diné language. His mother was a well-known weaver and his uncle a silversmith.  He attended high school in Albuquerque and went on an athletic scholarship to Haskell College in Lawrence, Kansas. At Haskell he enrolled in a jewelry making class where he developed a love for working with silver.  In addition to jewelry, he is known for his pottery in silver.   He is the winner of numerous awards and a belt buckle of his was featured on the cover of the Heard Museum’s Indian Market magazine in 2018.

Condition: the stamped silver bracelet is in excellent condition.

Provenance: this Norbert Peshlakai Silver Bracelet with Seven Stamped Horses "Magnificent Seven" is from the estate of an Albuquerque couple who were avid collectors of Native American arts and crafts.
