Once Known Native American Weaver

This Navajo rug is from the Two Grey Hills region of the Reservation. The entire textile was woven of natural, handspun native wool, without the use of any dyes. The dark brown and white colors are in their natural state. The background consists of carding the two colors together. This is visually a very strong piece.
The large design in the center of the textile is a geometric layout repeated in different shades and sizes as the design progresses to the center. This textile is of the style woven at Two Grey Hills before the 1940s. Rugs of that period were less complex than Two Grey Hills rugs of the later period.

Two Grey Hills Trading Post and Crystal Trading Post were neighbors-on opposite sides of the Chuska Mountains. It is clear that the Two Grey Hills patterns were derived from those of J. B. Moore's early Crystal floor rugs. Two Grey Hills weavers eventually added more design elements to their weaving. Their weavings became tapestries rather than floor rugs. It is these early weavings from Two Grey Hills weavers that were made for use on floors of Anglo homes. They followed traditional patterns begun in the late 1800s until changes began to occur after the 1950s.

This is an exceptional floor rug that has been used, and has another hundred years of use remaining.
