In the Southwest, rounded beads are one of the most classic forms used in Native jewelry. Used as spacers in squash blossom necklaces or just strung by themselves, silver beads have been a popular form of adornment for both Natives and their neighbors for more than a hundred years.

This necklace is comprised of sterling silver beads of graduated sizes.   It is a traditional string of non-stamped beads with a single stamped center bead. It measures about 26 inches, making it the perfect length to wear with anything.  It dates from the mid- to late-twentieth century.

Diné artists of the Navajo Nation have been creating works of art out of silver since the middle of the nineteenth century.  They learned the art of silversmithing from their Mexican neighbors. The first Diné smith was a man named Atsidi Sani (Old Smith).  It is generally believed that Atsidi Sani began working with silver around 1860, and by 1880 the art of silver making had spread around the reservation. Since then, the skillful craftsmanship of Navajo jewelers has become world renown.

Condition: the silver beads are in very good condition. They have acquired a lovely patina that comes only with age.

Provenance: this Diné Sterling Silver Graduated Bead Necklace is from a gentleman from Colorado
