This sterling silver rectangular ashtray by Navajo artist Suzie James is elevated a half-inch by a circular pedestal on the underside. The center area is a depressed bowl in the general shape of a concha. The central oval section is surrounded by a flat rectangular platform on which are rectangular rays, each with points at the ends surrounded by sun rays. The oval center has stamped peacock-like feathers in the center and a chain design around the edge. Four cigarette holders, each representing sun rays are attached to the four sides. A tall silver pole in the center of the ashtray supports a single blue-green oval and domed turquoise gemstone. The underside is stamped Sterling and with the name of the artist Suzie James.
Suzie James is a Diné silversmith living in Gallup, New Mexico. She is the daughter of Marcella James and sister of Jennie Blackgoat. She is still an active artist today.
