Night Chant and Sky People are original paintings by Diné artist Dennis Hathale. Adobe Gallery is offering these two paintings as a pair because they are sized and framed identically. Together, they create an impressive presentation using traditional Diné sand painting imagery. The majority of the Hathale pieces that have surfaced on the market recently are memory aids painted on muslin. We are pleased to offer these rare works on canvas.

"Night Chant" and "Sky People" are depictions of Diné of the Navajo Nation mythological figures. Each features a single figure, facing the viewer directly. They are sharp, detailed renderings, created with a palette that is both atypical and appealing. Those who appreciate the beauty of Diné mythology will likely appreciate this pair of paintings.

Each painting is signed as D. Hathale and Navajo in lower right of each painting. They are professionally framed in matching black.

Dennis Hathale (1961- ) is a Diné artist. Dennis and his brother Bruce are known for depicting sand painting imagery on muslin bed sheets, which are called memory aids. They are used by a medicine man when preparing a sand painting for a healing ceremony. Bruce and Dennis' father was Roger Hathale, known as "the medicine man from Tes Nez Iah," the patriarch of the family whose family name was Hataalii before it was anglicized.
