This unsigned pottery bowl was most likely made by a Diné potter in the mid-twentieth century.  The bowl is covered with a thin layer of piñon pitch, which gives it a slightly reflective look and a different feel than Pueblo pottery pieces.  It has a unique and beautiful coloration, with black and tan tones swirling around, into, and over each other.

The bowl’s shape is simple and appealing.  Just above its widest point, the bowl bends inward, forming a slight shoulder.  Then, it curves out, creating a slightly flared rim.  The shape matches the color well, creating a unique piece of pottery that will appeal to those who appreciate utilitarian Diné wares.

Condition: good condition, light wear from handling but no structural damage

Provenance: this Diné Old Wide Mouth Pottery Bowl is from the collection of a client from Virginia
