Most of Beatien Yazz's work reflects the everyday lives of the Navajo. It is not always obvious when he is picturing secular life-ways or religious life-ways, but in this instance, it is clear that the Navajo woman is out walking with her daughter, both in fine traditional clothing. Her velveteen blouse has silver button at the cuffs and her skirt is flared out at the bottom. Her hair is in a chonga and she is wearing traditional buckskin moccasins. The young daughter is clutching a doll.
The strong colors used by Yazz in this painting are still beautifully brilliant. He painted on a brownish color paper that appears that it could be a wood veneer over the mat board. The pattern of the paper is incorporated into the lower portion of her skirt. The painting is probably from the era of the 1950s or slightly later. It is signed B. Yazz in lower right.
Condition: appears to be in original condition
Provenance: from the collection of an Arizona resident
