This Navajo family is moving from its winter hogan to a summer camp where their sheep can graze in lush surroundings. This is typical of Navajo families throughout the reservation. The parents and younger children are riding in their buckboard and the older son is on his horse leading the sheep. Their dogs run alongside the wagon.
Harrison Begay was born in 1914 on the Navajo (Diné) Reservation. He attended the Santa Fe Indian School and studied under art teacher Dorothy Dunn. His distinctive style of painting has been popular for over 75 years. His art has influenced an entire generation of Native American painters. Begay spent his career painting scenes of everyday life among his people.
The painting is not dated but the small size of the signatures is an indication that it dates to the 1960s or earlier.
Condition: The painting appears to be in original excellent condition but it has not been examined out of the frame.
Provenance: From the collection of the family of Balcomb's Ranch Gallery, Colorado.
