This Traditional Jicarilla Apache basket with handles, dating from the 1930s-40s, is a fine example of the traditional coil-weaving techniques used by the Jicarilla Apache people. Measuring 14 inches in diameter and 5 1/2 inches deep, it was crafted for both everyday use and the commercial market, reflecting the balance between function and artistry in Jicarilla Apache basketry.

Typically used for gathering fruit, nuts, and other materials, as well as various household chores, this basket embodies the practicality and durability of Jicarilla weaving traditions. Like all Jicarilla baskets, it is coil-woven, usually from sumac or willow, with a five-rod bundle foundation that gives it a substantial, sturdy feel. The outer weave layer often obscures the individual rods, adding to the basket's smooth, seamless appearance.

The six large, repeated diamond patterns on the front and back are a striking design element, and as is characteristic of Jicarilla baskets, the patterns remain stronger and more vivid on the interior due to reduced exposure to light and fading. The basket is circular-shaped, with the outer two rows at the top extending to form sturdy handles at each end, enhancing both its functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Condition: excellent condition with light fading commensurate with its age.

Provenance: This Traditional Jicarilla Apache Basket with Handles is from a collector in California.
