Maria Martinez, San Ildefonso Pueblo Potter

Signature of Matriarch Maria Poveka Martinez, San Ildefonso Pueblo PotterThis small black jar by matriarch Maria Martinez, signed by Maria Poveka (her native name), stands at 3-¼ inches in height and is nearly spherical in form. It possesses an exceptional solid black sheen, showcasing the highest level of polish and refinement that could be achieved through the San Ildefonso Pueblo tradition.

The jar is left unpainted, allowing the viewer to fully appreciate the simplicity and perfection of its surface. It was made entirely by Maria Martinez, with her sister Clara likely responsible for the meticulous stone polishing. Clara, who was deaf, played a crucial role in Maria's process, and Maria supported her by having her polish all of her pottery. Additionally, Maria's son, Popovi Da, almost certainly assisted in the firing, ensuring the deep, lustrous finish that defines the best of their collaborative work.

This jar embodies the quintessential artistry of Maria Montoya Poveka Martinez (1887-1980), known as Pond Lily, where the seamless integration of form, finish, and technique results in a timeless masterpiece of Pueblo pottery.
