Mary and Leonard Trujillo are among the premier figurine potters at Cochiti Pueblo. Very few potters attempt large figurines anymore, but the Trujillos do and they do a fine job at it. Mary learned to make storytellers from Helen Cordero, her mother-in-law. Mary is one of the most accomplished potters at Cochiti. Leonard, her husband, has helped Mary since the 1980s.
This Male Storyteller with Black Hat and 7 Kids and a Dog has braids hanging down in front and a black hat with a leather hat band. His shirt is highly decorated with a floral pattern. In the Cordero fashion, his eyes are closed and his mouth open while he tells stories to the children. Most of the kids have a happy smile on their face but one or two seem sad. The storyteller figurine is signed with the names of both artists.
