Fritz Scholder's Matador is a bold and dynamic portrayal of a bullfighter at the height of his power. Created in 1981 on Guarro paper, this hand-signed and numbered lithograph captures the spirit of the bullfight with striking form and vivid color. The matador stands with unwavering confidence, dressed in an elaborate suit, complete with an embroidered short jacket, fitted trousers, and a traditional hat. Behind him, a red cape flows with movement, evoking the intensity and ritualistic grace of the fight.

Though best known for his revolutionary depictions of Native Americans, Scholder consistently challenged expectations. An enrolled member of the Luiseño tribe, he rejected traditional labels and refused to create art that fit neatly into predefined categories. His work pushed against romanticized notions of Indigenous identity, offering instead a raw and unfiltered perspective.

Scholder's distinctive style defies classification, blending elements of Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism, and pure instinct. He called himself an "American Expressionist," embracing the unpredictability of paint: "Paint drips, it smears. It's not because I'm trying to fool anyone into thinking this is a three-dimensional object on a two-dimensional surface..."

Signed in the lower right and numbered 6/170 in the lower left, this lithograph is a striking example of Scholder's ability to merge powerful imagery with unapologetic artistic vision. Matador is more than a depiction of a bullfighter — it's a testament to Scholder's lifelong commitment to pushing boundaries and redefining modern art.
