These polychrome candle holders were made by an unknown Laguna Pueblo artist. They likely date to between 1910 and 1930. Though on the smaller side and most likely made for the market, it would be a mistake to assume that these candle holders have little significance. Multiple potters have described to us the difficulty of making flat tiles like those that serve as the bases for these pieces. We have been told that successfully drying and firing flat tiles is challenging for many artists.
The unknown Laguna Pueblo, Ka'waika, artist who made these managed not only to craft near-perfect flat tiles, but also to add rounded handles and the cups that hold candles. These elements rise smoothly and seamlessly from the tiles. These candle holders, while modest in size, are actually an impressive technical feat.
Designs appear on the tiles, surrounding the cups with geometric elements in brown and orange. Soft fire clouds appear in various areas, and Laguna N.M. is written on the bottom of each tile. These are excellent examples of the wonderful works made for the market during the tail end of the historic era.
Condition: very good condition
Provenance: these Laguna Pueblo Polychrome Candle Holders are from a private Colorado collection
