This polychrome OLLA, or water jar, was made by an unknown Laguna Pueblo potter, most likely during the first quarter of the twentieth century. Laguna pottery is quite similar to Acoma pottery—so much so, in fact, that it is often incorrectly identified as Acoma pottery. There are certain motifs and characteristics that allow us to identify certain pieces as having been made at Laguna, and many of them are used prominently and repeatedly on this OLLA.

The first distinctly Laguna element on this OLLA is a zigzagging line, which circles the exterior in the lower design band. Its rigid right angles—architectural in nature, we have written previously—are a Laguna trait; Acoma potters would usually use rounded and curved elements. Another design that suggests Laguna is the trio of leaflike elements, which emerges from certain corners created by the intersections of the zigzagging line and the framing lines. The third is the coloration—the maroon tone used for the step elements and the black base suggest Laguna rather than Acoma. Given the prominence of these attributes and the bold nature of the composition, this OLLA is decidedly Laguna in appearance.

The designs and the pigments used to achieve them are strong and eye-catching, and the vessel itself is similarly remarkable. Its shoulder is pronounced, making sharp curves inward and then up to a tall neck. The rim is flared outward, but in a subtle and effective manner. When one handles or views this gorgeous OLLA, they will undoubtedly be impressed by the skillful, confident work that went into its creation.

Condition: excellent condition with light wear from handling. A superficial slip crack appears on the exterior, traveling about six inches down from the rim.

Provenance: this Laguna Pueblo Historic Polychrome OLLA is from a private collection
