The designation “child’s water jar” is not meant to demean the item but to more or less describe its size.  It does not indicate that the jar was made by a child but perhaps was made as a training aid for a young female to use in practicing walking with the jar on her head, with or without water.

Our designation that this is from Laguna Pueblo is based on the dark red lines that form blocks around the jar.  This is a typical design element of historic Laguna pottery.  The overall design of the jar is amazing.  There are fine line elements around the rim, in stepped pattern outlined by the orange stepped pattern elements and the black line stepped elements, all backed by the white slip.

The designs on the lower body are strong cross lines in black flanked by stepped pattern in orange.  All of the elements of design are outlined in black lines.  The lower body is painted orange as is the interior of the rim of the jar.  The jar probably dates to the very late 1800s.

Condition: very good condition

Provenance: from a gentleman in Illinois
