Artist signature of Ronald Honyouti [b. 1955] Hopi Pueblo, Hopituh Shi-nu-muThis masterfully carved Cross-Legged Katsina (Huhuwa) by renowned artist Ronald Honyouti embodies the spirit of resilience, humor, and generosity. Representing a man from Second Mesa, likely Mishongnovi, who suffered from a crippling disease that left him barely able to walk, Huhuwa remains a beloved figure among the Hopi. Despite his physical limitations, he is known for his cheerful demeanor and eagerness to help others, ensuring his place in Hopi tradition as a Katsina.

During ceremonies, Huhuwa hobbles about, chattering animatedly, delighting audiences with his humorous remarks. He is particularly noted for mimicking village dialects and recounting amusing local stories, making him a crowd favorite. His ragged clothing reflects his humble nature, and he is one of the most frequently chosen gift-giving Katsinam during the Powamu ceremony.

This Katsina features a striking checkerboarded kilt, a standout detail that enhances his distinctive character. In his left hand, he holds an intricately carved squash blossom, a beautiful symbol of Hopi culture. A fox pelt drapes down his back, adding another layer of texture and authenticity to the piece. He stands on a beautifully carved domed base, grounding him in a dynamic and lifelike stance.

Signed "R. Honyouti" on the bottom, this exceptional carving captures both the humor and enduring spirit of Huhuwa, making it a treasured addition to any collection.
