Nampeyo of Hano, Hopi-Tewa Potter and Matriarch

The main design on this Historic Southwest Indian Pottery vessel by Hopi-Tewa artist Nampeyo of Hano consists of three stylized birds around the shoulder. Each can be easily spotted by looking for long tail feathers, then progressing to the left, one can spot the head, eye, and head feathers. Each bird is backed by a deep red pigment. Above each bird is an abbreviated stylized bird symbol, backed by the yellow slip color. A wide framing line is just below the rim opening and another one just below the design field.

This exquisite small polychrome jar comes with a sad story. The owner purchased it and took it home and placed it on the mantle in a tilted position, so the top section was more visible. The jar slipped and fell off the mantle and landed on a tile floor. It cracked in three locations but did not break into sections. It has now been professionally restored to its previous magnificence.
