The Hopi Tawa (Sun) Katsina Doll by Muriel Navasie is a stunning tribute to the sun's essential role in Hopi culture. This intricately crafted doll embodies Tawa, revered as the giver of light and life. As a leader of ceremonies, Tawa brings warmth, provides shelter for the elderly, inspires a bright future, and fosters playfulness in the young. Considered one of the most powerful katsinas, he symbolizes the sun's significance as the largest and brightest of all stars, vital for life and growth.
Muriel Navasie (1954-1988), a renowned Hopi carver and the wife of Cecil Calnimptewa, Jr., was known for her extraordinary craftsmanship. She infused this Katsina doll with tones that reflect the sun's warmth and radiance. Carved from cottonwood root, the doll's attire is enhanced with colors that highlight intricate patterns and symbols derived from traditional Hopi designs. Tawa's face is painted with a joyful expression, and his headdress features 22 beautifully carved feathers that represent the sun's rays.
This piece is signed M. Navasie ‘87 on the back of the base, accompanied by her trademark spider on a strand.
In his right hand, Tawa holds a gourd rattle, while in his left, he carries a squash blossom. He is adorned with an elaborate Hopi embroidered sash that drapes down his right side, adding to the richness of his presentation. Additionally, a bundle of feathers protrudes from the back of his mask, further enhancing the doll's visual appeal.
