This striking sterling silver bracelet showcases the distinctive Hopi overlay technique, a hallmark of Hopi Pueblo silversmithing. The overlay process involves carefully cutting a design into a top layer of silver, which is then soldered onto a second layer, creating depth and contrast. The recessed areas are oxidized to enhance the intricate detailing, resulting in a beautifully textured and dimensional piece.
At the center of the bracelet, an oval black stone is set on a raised post, framed by precisely cut bezels that add a refined, sculptural quality. A traditional long-haired Katsina motif is featured in the overlay design, paying homage to Hopi spiritual traditions. An eagle head hallmark is stamped on the piece, identifying this as work by Roger Selina.
Artist Roger Selina is a jeweler from the Hopi Snow Clan. He lives in the village of Shungopavi on Second Mesa, Hopi Pueblo, Arizona. He has been an active jeweler since 1985.
