This small Hopi dish is decorated in designs that evoke a celestial feel. The curved element with its long beak is probably a stylized bird figure but is presented in a New Moon shape which encircles a star-like dot radiating in several directions. To the left of that are two comet-like figures with trailing cosmic dust. Perhaps none of this was the potter’s intent but it is interesting to speculate.
Condition: The pottery dish is in quite good condition for an object that dates to circa 1910. There is a small hairline crack from the rim to about 1/3 of the way towards the center of the dish and this is not a danger to the vessel; does not compromise the integrity of the vessel. It can be seen in the images if you look carefully and it’s barely noticeable with the naked eye.
Provenance: from the collection of a family in Ohio
