Wallace Youvella, Sr., Hopi Pueblo Potter

Wallace Youvella is the son of famous Hopi potter Susie Youvella, however, he did not learn the techniques of making pottery from his mom, but learned by watching his famous wife Iris Nampeyo as she worked. Early examples of Wallace’s pottery is more in the style of red-slipped, stone-polished wares from Santa Clara Pueblo, then later he switched to the more traditional Hopi style. This small seed jar is slipped with red clay on the rim and lower body and includes sgraffito designs of Kokopelli playing his flute around the corn plants on the upper shoulder. I recall purchasing this style pottery from Wallace in the early 1980s so I would speculate that this one dates to that period. Condition: The seed jar is in original excellent condition. It is signed by the artist. Provenance: ex.coll.
