Once Known Native American Potter

This redware tile was made by a Hopi Pueblo artist. We can't say with absolute certainty, but we'd estimate that it dates to the 1920s. It is gently patinated and the painted designs are softly abraded. These visible results of years of handling will be appreciated by those who are drawn to the look and feel of a well-used historic pot. As is usually the case with works from this era, we are unable to identify the artist.

The tile has a soft red tone that will appeal to many. It is decorated on one side with a bird design in black and white, using a stylish arrangement of interlocking triangular elements to form much of the body. The bird appears to be in flight, with its wings and legs outstretched, its head turned to one side, and its beak open. It reaches to each edge of the tile—a nice touch from a potter with a keen eye for design.
