This impressive jar by Dextra Quotskuyva Nampeyo stands out due to its larger-than-usual size. Each side features a Hopi Palhikmana adorned with an intricate arrowed and feathered tablita, painted in a vibrant polychrome palette of brown and red. A unique aspect of this piece is the inlaid turquoise representing jaclas that accompany the Palhikmana. The centerpiece of the tablita is a detailed ear of corn suggesting a Corn-Grinding katsina maiden, flanked by a textile motif on either side of the Palhikmana.
The surface of the jar is nuanced with subtle fire clouds, which lend a dynamic quality to the highly polished finish, transitioning from a warm to a cool cream color. This combination of scale, detailed motifs, and the nuanced surface treatment makes this jar a distinctive and striking example of Dextra Quotskuyva Nampeyo's artistry.
Dextra Quotskuyva Nampeyo (1928-2019) descends from a distinguished ancestral line of potters-beginning with the Sikyatki ancestors of prehistoric times and more recently from her great-grandmother, Nampeyo of Hano, her grandmother Annie Healing Nampeyo, and her mother Rachel Namingha. Following tradition in every aspect of construction and firing has always been a rule with her, but using her own creative talent in the execution of vessel shape and design is what has set her apart from others and made her one of the greatest Hopi potters of the 20th Century. She was born on September 6, 1928 and passed away at the age of 90 in February of 2019.
