Rugan is a class of katsinas that come in groups, accompanied by the Corn Maidens, who play on rasp musical instruments. There are various types of Rugan Katsinas. This one is a variant of a Hopi Nagyayatotaka (Swaying Man) Katsina which is a type of Rugan Katsina.
The Hopi Pueblo carving appears to date to the 1940s before the advent of shiny acrylic paints. It was carved from a single piece of cottonwood root with the nose and ears added separately.
Condition: very good condition with expected wear
