This Mudhead (Koyemsi) Katsina Doll is a striking figure, notable for its large feet and the vibrant orange-lined scarf that highlights its linear detailing. Originally adopted from Zuni Pueblo, Koyemsi—also known as ‘Tachukti' to the Hopi—are important cultural figures in both Hopi and Zuni societies. Unlike katsinas, they are not spirit beings but serve as intermediaries, announcing events, relaying messages, and guiding ceremonial activities.

The Mudhead's role is highly versatile, often leading racers into the village, challenging villagers in contests, and engaging in games with young audience members during dance breaks. Sometimes, a lone Mudhead will appear as a drummer, while at other times, any dancer missing the proper mask can take on the Mudhead role by wearing the mask. Their adaptability is central to their significance, as Barton Wright highlights in Clowns of the Hopi, where he notes the fluid nature of their attire and functions.

Crafted from cottonwood root and adorned with paint, yarn, and feathers, this doll embodies the dynamic spirit of the Koyemsi, honoring its important role in Hopi and Zuni culture through its bold design and expressive details.
