This is a very large katsina doll representing the Hano’mana Katsina. She is carrying a smaller version of herself held in her shawl across her back. Hano’mana is a First Mesa katsina. It does not feel like this was carved from cottonwood root—it is dense wood (perhaps cottonwood trunk) and heavy in weight. It is a legitimate Hopi doll and was perhaps made for the Fred Harvey Advertising Department on special order. The feather fan in her hand is not original to the doll and has been added for effect. It could and should be removed. There are no markings on the doll that would identify it belonging to the Fred Harvey establishment, however. It has been included in this collection based on the overall collection information.
Condition: it is in very good condition for its age
