This Hopi Pueblo wood carving of a Crow Mother Katsina is of a style different from the others in this collection in that it appears to be authentic, but according to our expert consultant, the band above the face should be multicolored. Would a Hopi make such a mistake? Not likely. It is possible that the mask has been painted again. Additionally there are paint abrasions of the manta where such would not normally be expected. It is possible that the wing on the left of the mask has been replaced as the black paint on the two wings differ. She is mounted on a square black wood platform of the style used by the Fred Harvey Company on many of its katsina dolls. My thoughts are that she is a legitimate Hopi carved doll that has had some repairs.
Conditon: this Hopi Angwusnasomtaqa, Crow Mother Katsina Doll from the Fred Harvey Collection is structurally in excellent condition.
