This Zuni Pueblo Polychrome OLLA, or water jar, dating from circa 1890-1900, is a remarkable example of Zuni pottery, showcasing traditional design elements and craftsmanship unique to its period. The painted rim curls outward slightly, giving the piece an elegant flare. The top band features an alternating double-ended scroll motif paired with dagger figures, adding dynamic movement around the vessel. At the shoulder, prominent panels display the "Deer-in-Feather-House" design, separated by a middle band adorned with a motif of overlapping waves. This motif is a characteristic of this era, later replaced by the more commonly known Zuni birds.
Vertical double-ended scrolls separate the main design panels, lending this olla an uncommon and visually striking appearance. A distinct puki line is visible, a hallmark of earlier ollas; in later periods, this line would have been smoothed away. Altogether, this olla reflects the artistry of Zuni pottery, capturing the spirit of its time in both form and design.
Condition: in good condition with a one inch rim chip (see below) and minor surface abrasions consistent with the age of this olla.
Provenance: this Historic Zuni Pueblo Polychrome OLLA, circa 1890-1900 is from a collector in Santa Fe
