This beautifully crafted Tesuque jar, with its swollen form, dates to the late 19th or early 20th century. This style is often associated with the polychrome pottery created during this period. The red rim and other distinct features mark a significant era in Tesuque Pueblo pottery, reflecting both traditional practices and the influences of increased interactions with non-Native markets.

The underside of the vessel is concave, and the vessel body is rounded in the best tradition of Tewa vessels. Double framing lines above and below the design around the body serve to isolate the two design areas.

At Tesuque Pueblo, the design on the main body often consists of individual items that float on the surface, unattached to other elements. This jar is a good example, featuring floral designs around the body.

Condition: very good condition

Provenance: this Historic Tesuque Pueblo Pottery Jar with Red Rim is from the collection of a New Mexico art collector
