Once Known Native American Potter

This iconic San Ildefonso Black-on-red olla or water jar exemplifies the pueblo's style of the late 19th century, possibly dating as early as the 1890. Measuring 9-½ inches in height and 12-½ inches in diameter, the vessel showcases the distinctive San Ildefonso form of the period, with a small base that tapers gracefully from a wide, rounded body. Its slight tilt enhances the sense of handmade craftsmanship, a natural characteristic of coil-built pottery.

The jar is adorned with exquisitely painted raincloud motifs around the body which hang just below the shoulder, executed with a remarkable balance of precision and fluidity. The black pigment flows effortlessly across the red-slipped surface, which is applied over tan clay, creating a striking contrast. The design work appears both intentional and organic, a testament to the skill of the potter. This piece embodies the elegance and refinement of historic San Ildefonso pottery, making it a remarkable representation of the era's pottery traditions.

From the 1910 census, we know that there were only 8 potters at San Ildefonso at the time. We also know that in 1880, Black-on-red pottery was being made, as examples were collected by Stevenson. It is believed that all leading potters made Black-on-red pottery. According to Jonathan Batkin, known potters making Black-on-red were Martina and Florentino Montoya, Maria and Julian Martinez, Dominguita Pino, and her daughter Tonita Roybal. Possibly other potters of the period made it as well.
